Work / Life balance, is it really a ‘balance’ any more?
When you hear the word balance you imagine some scales with 2 weights sat on opposing sides, separated.
Whereas in today’s connected world, I feel more comfortable focusing on good work / life ‘integration’.
This happens to a certain degree whether we like it or not. Family member turns up at work, business inquiry during the evening, whatever it is we deal with it somehow.
People are increasingly working ‘funny’ hours, and business hours have blurred at the edges. You, like everyone else, now expect to be able to shop, bank, ask questions at any time that suits your life pattern.
If you don’t answer, someone else will. I personally don’t want to take the risk, if all it means is pausing a film for 5 minutes I’ll do it, rather than wait until 9:00 am the next day to find they’ve ‘shopped’ elsewhere.
Because I offer online support I probably witness more of this, helping people out at all hours of the day. Are you experiencing a change?
With work becoming harder to come by, will you accept and integrate or keep balancing?
